Awakening in the Now
Tuesdays at 6PM
Eckhart Tolle, the author of The Power of Now,and Jon Kabat-Zinn,
the founder of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, both say “you are not in the Now, you are the Now.” What does that mean? What is this Now?
Almost all of us live in a world of thoughts and concepts that occur in time. We tend to think of a continuum of time with a past, a present, and a future. In this model, the present is a “placeholder” between the past and the future. While we can’t put a definite duration on “the present,” we still tend to think of it as lasting for some amount of time. If we watch our thoughts, almost all (if not all) of them are about the past or the future. You can check this out for yourself if you set aside five minutes and just watch your thoughts. You can put them in three buckets labeled “the past,” “the present,” and “the future” and see which ones fill up.
Eckhart Tolle and Jon KabatZinn are saying that the Now is outside of time and is just what is unfolding. A thought about the past is a memory that is occurring now and a thought about the future is an imagined occurrence that you are having now. You are always in the now and you can not leave the now no matter how hard you try. The now is not between the past and the future because that is all there is.
What we identify with as “me” lives almost exclusively in the past and the future. We are seldom in the present where our lives are actually unfolding. Occasionally we get a break from this “me” and experience what is without thoughts or concepts. This is often accompanied by a sense of openness and peace. This is our natural state that has gotten covered over with all the programming from our families and culture. The “spiritual search” is a search to find that again. You never lost it. It is who you are.
The introductory program in awakening in the now will start with a video of Eckhart Tolle talking about this and then we will explore what keeps us from our birthright. Over the eight weeks we will explore and experience the alive direct Now. Eight Session Program fee is $150.
